There are four costs associated with every song.
1-The cost of the arrangement (this is when someone creates a music sheet of a song into an acapella/harmony/barbershop style version of the original.)
2-The cost of producing and recording the learning tracks (1 full mix, and 1 of each of the four voice parts)
3-The cost of the copyright right clearance (to ensure the original authors are paid for the use of their song)
4-Exclusivity (how long does the person who commissions this song get to be the only person/ensemble to sing this arrangement. Also, after a period of time, who else can purchase this arrangement to sing)

4-Exclusivity (how long does the person who commissions this song get to be the only person/ensemble to sing this arrangement. Also, after a period of time, who else can purchase this arrangement to sing)
For (1) the cost of the arrangement is the bulk of the cost. This is where an arranger takes the song you have commissioned and creates a music sheet into an acapella/harmony/barbershop 4 part voice style. For a song that is 1 minute or less, the cost can be as low as 200$ US. For a song that is 1-3 minutes, the cost can run up too 500$ US and for songs over 3 minutes or a Medley (a long song made up of the chorus parts of multiple songs) the cost and run up to 1000$ or more. The experience and style of the arranger, and how they connect to the original song plays a factor as to which arranger is chosen for a particular song. further more there are two levels of arrangements (Show vs Contest). Show arrangements are for sing outs and generally created for beginner and general audiences and can be less expensive. Contest arrangements are created for judges for high end singing competitions. They tend to be more challenging for singers, have more complicated singing style to match what the judges are looking to critique and are much more expensive. For the purposes of our chorus we are looking for Show level songs.
For (2) whenever possible we will contract for the arranger of the song to also produce and record the 5 audio learning tracks of the song. When it is the original arranger, they will usually sing the 5 tracks themselves for an additional 100-200$. However, not every arranger will offer this service. Some arrangers will only do the arrangement, and the another party will have to be commissioned to produce and record the learning tracks (this is the case where arrangers do not want to sing themselves). The second party may sing it themselves or do the producing and sound engineering and get another person to the do voice. Second party sound tracks can run from 50$-300$ depending on the experience and number of people involved. Whenever possible we will be seeking arrangers that can do their own singing learning tracks.
For (3) the copyright clearance is non-negotiable. Once the music sheet arrangement is created it must be submitted to rights clearance agency (or directly to the original rights holder). Working with an agency can be an easier process as original rights holders may not want to be communicated with. The music sheet is uploaded to the rights agency and sold on their online platform. We buy the music sheets from the platform based on their minimum requirement (or for the number of people in the chorus). Generally for the cost of 10-12 music sheets of the arrangement can run up to 50$ Cdn (most are sold in US dollars).
For (4) as a general rule when a song is commissioned for arrangement, the standard is that the person paying for the creation gets the exclusive right of 1 year (12 months) from the date of delivery. In some cases it means the arranger will not/cannot sell the arrangement to anyone else to sing for 12 months, after which, the arranger can promote the sale of the arrangement. In other cases it means the arranger will put the song up on a rights clearance site and once we purchase the music sheets (clearing the copyright permissions) the arrangement music sheet continues to stay up on the site for anyone to buy it, but the arranger does not actively promote it. This means that anyone can buy it if they happen to find it on the rights clearance site. Some arrangers do grant ongoing exclusivity to the person paying. It can be a matter of preference, or it can be a matter of paying the arranger an additional bonus fee included in the price of the negotiated arrangement. We will be seeking the standard 1 year of exclusivity for most tracks with occasional exceptions.
NOTE: When the exclusivity on the arrangement has run out, the arranger will sell the arrangement for way less than the amount the arranger was original paid. Which means that the cost of the music sheet arrangement, the copyright clearance and the learning audio tracks (when prepared by the same arranger) can be purchased for 100$ or less. In every case possible, we will be aiming to grow our repertoire with those options.
