Who:
Hi Everyone!
This is Frank.
Welcome to the NDG ENCORE Singing Chorus.
The goal is to have a chorus of about 20 people,
with all 20 going to the various sing outs,
and for those sing outs that limit the number of singers*,
will be chosen based on ability and appropriate to the venue.
(*Some venues will limit the number of performers)
When you arrive, please leave your politics, causes and
that chip on your shoulder at the door.
When you come into our space, you are either a singer, or a fan of music. Anyone found to be disruptive will be asked to leave.
WHAT:
The focus of this group would be
to learn a repertoire of songs
that we can market to sing
at very specific themed events.
This repertoire would include
TV show theme songs, popular movie songs,
fun and uplifting and motivational songs
We have a Music Director with experience.
We also have at least 3 composers who will help arrange a small collection of songs.
We already have original lyrics for a Birthday song and a Congratulations song
so we can start doing Singing Telegrams on Video.
Will to work with you and learn with you.
As long as you have a love of music and are willing to put in the work,
I will work with you.
When:
Friday Nights 7 pm to 10 pm
Rehearsals will take place once a week for a 3 hour block.
Rehearsals will be open to the public so we will always have an audience.
Where:
N.D.G. - Monkland Community Centre
4410 W Hill Ave, Montreal, Quebec H4B 2Z5
Our goal is that in a year from now, we average 1 sing out a week
Cost:
A $2 fee per person is requested to cover the admin costs and other expenses.
Chorus members are NOT required to be a member of the Harmony Society.
We will not be attending any contests or competitions for at least 3 years.

There is a*Finders Fee (referral fee) of 20% that will be paid to anyone who brings the chorus an opportunity that leads to a paid gig. (*Conditions apply. Send all inquiries to frank@franktalks.com for further information and terms of the Finders Fee.)
If the person who finds us the gig has the ability to sing at the chorus level, that person will also get to sing with the chorus members selected to perform at that paid gig.

Here is an idea of what I would like to do:
We will sing the anthem at sporting events (Bell Centre for the Habs, etc...)
We go to conventions like Comic-con, Star Trek Conventions, Anime Conventions, etc...
We get a table space there for the chorus and spend the days of the convention singing songs related to the theme of that convention.
We move around to the tables of vendors and for each vendor we sing a song related to what they are selling. If there are selling Pokeman merchandise, we sing the Pokeman theme song. If they are selling Sports merchandise we sing Sports songs.
If a family comes to the convention in costume (Spiderman, Ninja Turtles, Sailor Moon) we sing to the families, get them to record it and share those videos online.
If someone comes in dressed up in full costume, we partner with them in some way. For example, if someone comes in dressed like Darth Vader with Stormtroopers we follow them and sing a version of The Imperial March.
At those same conventions, we will sing songs related to their celebrity guests. So if the guest is an actor from a TV show, we sing the theme song of that show as the celebrity takes the stage. We would also want to make a recording of us singing the song to them (serenade them if you will) for social media videos.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with choruses choosing to aim for contests instead of local sing outs. Contests are great ways of getting expert feedback and meeting other like minded singers who are as passionate about singing music as you are.
However, as a fellow singer told me, "One key to success in other cities that are hotbeds of singing music, is to be visible in their communities and to become well known for enriching the cultural and artistic quality of life for their citizens."
I wholeheartedly agree. That is in part why I want the quartet I am creating to focus on sing outs (paid and otherwise) and not focus on contests. The local community does not care about contests that do not take place in the city.
Keep in mind that chorus that focus on contests end up putting in a lot of their time (the majority of their time) into preparing for those contests. Most choruses are volunteers who do this as a hobby. There is only so much time that members have to offer. Furthermore, when the focus is on contests, even the song selections reflect that.
Songs done at concerts do not always translate to song that audiences will pay to hear. With so much time goes into prepping for contests, that there is little time to focus on songs that would be ideal for sing outs and get the local community involved.
My focus is on sing outs focusing on songs people would pay for.
